What to actually do with your tax refund πΈ
A little "free" money doesn't hurt
Getting a tax refund feels like free money (it's actually just the government returning what you overpaid but still a win is a win!!)
The problem? If you don't have a plan for it, it'll just camouflage with the rest of your expenses and vanish.
Here's how to actually use it well:
1. Build your emergency fund No 1-3 months of expenses saved yet? This is your sign. Life is unpredictable and that cushion changes everything.
2. Kill the high-interest debt Credit card sitting at 22%? That's the worst investment you're making without realizing it. Pay it down first.
3. Start (or add to) your investing journey You don't need a lot to start. You just need to start. Use this as your push.
4. Put it toward a real goal Not just "savings" but toward an actual thing. A trip, a car, a down payment. Money moves better when it has somewhere to go.
5. Invest in yourself A course, a certification, something that grows your income. That's a return too.
A strategy we used with a client recently π
Max out your FHSA β get a tax refund β reinvest that into your RRSP β get another tax refund β put that into your TFSA.
(FHSA = first home savings, RRSP = retirement account, TFSA = tax-free growth)
Done consistently, this can grow to close to $100k in 10 years. Your refund literally making more refunds.
Two ways you can work with me when you are ready:
1. Free insurance & coverage review Most early earners completely skip this and it's a big gap. If you have liabilities (a car, rent, people depending on you) let's make sure you actually have your foundations covered. Completely free, no pressure.
2. The DIY Path I'll teach you how to manage your money, build savings and pick the easy investments without the overwhelm. The goal isn't just to "save money because that's what you're supposed to do" but to have an actual reason for it.
Interested in either? Just reply to this email and we'll figure out the best next step for you.
Until next timeβ¦go do something smart with that refund π
